New Year’s evening
The first one is New Year’s Eve. It’s often with friends. We have colored balls and we throw them with kind of tube and streamers. At midnight, we kiss each other even if we don’t know the other. Till the end of January, we say happy new year to others. Before, cards were sending. Now, I receive more by internet.
Epiphany
These days it’s king’s cake. It’s a famous feast for Christians. The mages kings went to see Jesus with presents. In North of France. For Epiphany, we eat in North of France “galette des rois” , a cake made of almonds cream ( frangipane) or apples compote . There is in it a small “feve”, a small thing in it and which had it is declared queen or king for the day
Chandeleur et Mardi Gras
We eat pancakes. The best region is in Brittany West of France. There are pancakes with sugar and cassonnade a kind of Belgian sugar.
We also eat Sarasin ( black wheat) with ham, cheese and eggs. My daughter ate one with fresh cream and smoked salmon with her friend. She is coming from Brrittany, Marion. They lived together in “coloc’” co renting during two years.
During January and February, they are carnivals. The most famous here is from Dunkirk with different troops. Some men are usually dress as women.
Careme
In catholic religion we have the careme which is lasting during forty days of not eating so sweet dishes. When I was young, we ate no sweets and give the money back to disabled people. We didn’t eat meat on Fridays.
Eastern
It’s eastern then In my family, we put chocolate eggs in the garden in Merlimont for children. And we ide the parents and children have to seek
1st May is the Labor Day. People don’t work. Even there are no newspapers. People offer a sprig of lilly-in-the- valley for happiness.
The May
The end of the Second World War 1945. We lost in 1940 against the Germans. The general de Gaulle made his call from London for doing a kind of civil war with the enemy. Especially Great Britain and USA
helped us. There was the boat landing in June 1944 in Normandy the D Day. The Germans thought it was in the Pas de Calais they even created Atlantic wall. Many Jewish people were died in Poland Auschwitz for example.
Mother’s day
We have mother’s day; I offer flowers to my mother in law usually; Children makes at school gifts for their mother.
14th July
It was taking of the Bastille it’s remembrance from 1789. Bastille was a prison; It’s the beginning of the French revolution and monarchy was ending
1st November the Holy Day
November 11th 1918, the end of first world war.
On this day, 11th November 2014 was unveiled the ring of memory in Lorette near where I'm living. When I was young, we used to go to this biggest French cemetery of France. In the new monument, more than 500,000 names are written from all over the world. The first name came from Nepal. I saw a video from London with plenty poppies representing all the men from the commonwealth who were died. 888, 54 were planed. It was near the tower of London.
When I was young, old soldiers sold cornflowers on this day form money. You put on the buttonhole or a jacket
WE EVEN HAVE A PART OF Canada Land who was given to them because of men who were died. I’s called the “crete de Vimy”, an important victory
Christmas
I spent nice Christmas. For Christmas, we were more than 20 at home.
For meal we had greasy leaver and a pig in galantine. What a fun with it. We can see its head and feet. There were a lot of photos
We didn’t go to the church but the rests the day after I gave it for a sharing lunch with the priest. Marie-France who was alone went to my parents. We ate oysters
We had a great fun specially when my mother sais “ she is often buying promotes
